At The Dermatology Practice, skincare is not merely about achieving short-term cosmetic outcomes; it is about guiding patients towards a lifetime of healthy skin.
The clinic offers comprehensive specialist dermatology care for skin and hair as well as allergies. It is also dedicated to managing chronic skin conditions such as eczema and acne, as well as scar management.
What sets this practice apart is its unique niche expertise in Mohs micrographic surgery, a specialised skin surgery aimed at minimising scarring while effectively removing cancerous tissue.
Dr Mok Zhun Rui has wide experience in the management and treatment of skin tumours, with a particular expertise in skin surgery and cancer removal, having trained in this specialty during an overseas advanced surgical fellowship with St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London, United Kingdom.
In his previous role in public healthcare, he was also the Clinical Lead of the Multidisciplinary Skin Tumour Board, National University Cancer Institute (NCIS) of Singapore, and also led the Mohs Micrographic Surgical team at the National University Hospital, Singapore.
He explains the meticulous process of Mohs surgery.
“It's a tissue-sparing surgical procedure that is conducted in stages. We remove thin layers of cancer-containing skin until only cancer-free skin remains. This layer-by-layer technique ensures minimal scarring and precise removal of cancerous cells, offering patients peace of mind with narrow margin control.”
Conventional excision surgery involves removing a wider area of affected skin, which is studied post-surgery for cancer. With Mohs surgery, each layer of skin is studied for cancer cells during the surgery for a better chance at ensuring all cancerous cells are removed.
Dr Mok adds, “We offer a one-stop centre for diagnosis and removal, streamlining the process for our patients.” Apart from cold steel surgery, the clinic also offers a range of minimally invasive options to address various aspects of skin care, including lasers and injectables.
Dr Mok and his colleagues’ commitment to patients extends far beyond surgery.
The Practice’s mission of care is all about individualising care for every patient. He explains that the team is dedicated to walking alongside patients through their skin concerns and challenges, particularly with chronic conditions like eczema.
“It's about developing a partnership with patients," he explains. “We help them manage their skin concerns, whether it's scarring, acne, or eczema, by educating them about their skin health and setting realistic expectations.”
Understanding that skin is a living, evolving organ influenced by factors such as age, diet, weather, hormones and even stress, Dr Mok underscores the importance of patient education.
“Skin is not necessarily perfect; it changes over time. By educating patients about skin health and functions, we empower them to make informed decisions about their skincare regimen and lifestyle habits,” he shares.
Due to the plethora of skincare information available online, Dr Mok emphasises the importance of getting advice from credible sources.
He adds, “We educate patients on skincare regimes tailored to their skin type, and how to navigate through the abundance of information, so that they can make the best decisions for their individual needs.
“Our goal is to partner with patients in their skin goals, ensuring not just treatment but lifelong management and a lifetime of good skin health.”
Located in Camden Medical, the clinic also benefits from a vibrant medical community. Dr Mok looks forward to collaborating with other medical specialists to provide holistic care to patients. After all, he reflects, “We are more than the sum of our parts.”
